Even during this COVID-19 pandemic the clients in these two shelters Still yearn for their own home. Yet, they know they have safety and all necessities while being here because OMI Board of Directors continues to care about them.

About Sanford Outreach Mission

After becoming incorporated in 1988, OMI continued to operate out of the 705 Chatham Street shelter.  In the early 1990’s, OMI purchased a home at 507 Third Street to renovate for a women’s shelter.  For the next 20 years, both shelters were operated by churches and the Board of Directors, helping an average of 70 people per year.

In May 2018, the OMI Board of Directors expanded the mission’s goals to help more people. OMI opened 24 hours a day, seven days a week, increased bed capacity, and incorporated the “Low Barrier, Housing First” approach.  After going to this new operating philosophy in 2018, OMI helped 249 the first year.

In 2019, OMI added full-time and part-time staff, plus volunteers. The board created an operations manual, standard operating procedures, fiscal policies, installed security cameras, and implemented a coordinated entry/intake plan with the help of United Way’s 2-1-1 system. Staff were trained to enter client data in the statewide HMIS (Homeless Management Information System), which is maintained by the North Carolina Coalition to End Homelessness.

In 2019 we helped another 249 people experiencing Homelessness, get their lives back, one person at a time.

Novellas Story

Tim’s Story

Tim had been living on the streets for 7 to 10 years. Struggling with untreated mental health challenges, he had become extremely withdrawn and fearful of authority figures. He hadn’t bathed in nearly a year, his hair was matted, and he was covered in dirt and the smell of urine.

Despite his resistance to social interaction, the men’s shelter case manager and one of the residents began bringing Tim a cup of coffee each day. Occasionally, he would accept a cookie or Danish from their food runs. Every visit was a gentle invitation: “Come by the shelter—have a bath, get a warm meal.”

One day, to everyone’s surprise, Tim said yes.

He came to the shelter, bathed, changed into clean clothes, and fell asleep in the living room. When he woke, he asked to be taken back to where he had been staying. On the way, the case manager asked if he had ever visited Daymark, a local mental health provider. Tim replied that he had, but it had been a long time. With compassion and persistence, the case manager convinced Tim to go inside and speak with a doctor.

Recognizing his condition, Daymark staff admitted Tim to the hospital for three days. He received medication and was stabilized. Upon discharge, he returned to the men’s shelter on Chatham Street, choosing to give it a try.

Over time, Tim began taking his medication consistently. He grew more talkative and social. One day, he even agreed to a haircut—and the transformation was remarkable.

In daily meetings with the case manager, they discovered that Tim had a daughter in Virginia. She had been searching for her father for over five years and was relieved and overjoyed to hear he was safe. She also informed them that Tim was receiving SSDI payments.

Together, they visited the Social Security office and learned Tim had over $20,000 in unclaimed benefits stored in a federal account. He requested a debit card, which arrived at the shelter within three days. With it, he bought new clothes and traveled to Virginia to reconnect with his family.

Now housed and connected with a mental health provider, Tim continues to thrive. He checks in monthly with the case manager and has only returned once—to say thank you.

Susan’s Story

Susan, a middle-aged woman recently divorced, was left with no support system, mounting medical bills, and no financial safety net. After losing her apartment, she lived in her car for several weeks.

She was eventually referred to the OMI women’s shelter through the 2-1-1 crisis system. During intake, case workers recognized that Susan had strong work skills and a dedicated work ethic.

She joined the re-housing program, which provided a structured plan to help her find employment, save money, and secure stable housing. In a short time, she secured a job in the healthcare field and began saving for rent and utility deposits.

While working, Susan also focused on repairing her credit. After three months, she had saved enough money and found a small house in a safe neighborhood.

Today, Susan is back on her feet—employed, independent, and building a brighter future.

Tasha’s Story

Tasha became homeless after a divorce, even though she held a full-time position in healthcare. She struggled with money management, and it wasn’t long before she was evicted.

Her church referred her to Outreach Mission, where case managers saw her strong work history and recognized that financial counseling was her key need.

She was referred to Life Skills Training through the Salvation Army, while also participating in a savings and housing plan at the women’s shelter.

Thanks to the support and the stability of shelter housing, Tasha was able to save enough money within two months to pay for rent and deposits. With the help of a local realtor, she found a small home near her workplace.

Tasha has now been living independently for over a year, thriving with the tools and support that helped her regain control of her life.
